Buy appserver :) Makes headaches go away. Seriously, Try using shell32.dll to launch the rsh program instead of os-command. Some programs like shell32.dll better than os-command. Dunno why. Look in progress KB to see example using shell32.dll Scott

Verify that your working directory is valid. Also, if you are connecting to any databases, verify that they are started prior to starting the appserver. I would start out by creating a new Appserver broker from Progress Explorer and start it with the default values put there by Progress...

We have tried using progress sockets as well for smtp communication. In the end we found an ActiveX smtp object that is easier to use and less confusing. Cost around $300 but it was royalty free.
